about

To Be Here | Grey Reverend

Intimate, minimal, very personal songs have defined the career of Grey Reverend, the solo project of singer-songwriter L.D. Brown. Of the Days (2011) and A Hero’s Lie (2013) are spare, honest, haunting creations. L.D.'s warm voice and virtuosic fingerpicking combine with unusual chord shapes and carefully placed silences to create songs that often summon the darkest part of the night.

To Be Here, his latest LP, builds on this sonic and lyrical aesthetic. L.D. adds strings, horns, organ, percussion, piano, and electric guitar to his characteristic intimacy, creating a new levity to the Grey Reverend sound—brightening, deepening, expanding it. The record not only evokes Nick Drake and Elliott Smith but also Steely Dan and The Sundays. Light pierces the darkness throughout the compositions and lyrics, as if To Be Here were written with the dawn in mind.

“So Many Demons,” “Find My Way,” and the title track explore suffering and disconnection as well as surrender and reconciliation. L.D.’s vulnerable vocals and beautiful melodies mirror the meaning behind his words. “Altruistic Holiday 2017,” a rearrangement of a previously recorded song about civil disobedience, is more celebratory than its original. The addition of piano, drums, vibes, and organ shifts its tone and meaning. The song no longer conjures days of battling but days of rest.

Other songs blend imagistic lyrics with atmospheric soundscapes to evoke beating hearts, dark rooms, and noirish dreams. "First Fires" takes a track L.D. co-wrote in 2013 with electronic producer Bonobo and presents it in a far more visceral setting. And “Sunday Soldiers,” the record’s final track, initially brings to mind wind, space, and darkness—until the arrival of a rhythm section illuminates and colors the stark atmosphere. The luminous mood continues until the final note echoes rather than fades.

To Be Here is complex and accessible, expansive and introspective. It’s varied, cohesive, and L.D.'s most accomplished set of songs to date.
